I won't let $5 million dollars of The Illawarra's economy drop through the net… and the Hawks will play again! - Mat Campbell, Wollongong Hawks Captain.

Mat Campbell was jubilant today as he announced that it's up to him and over 5000 fans that attended the last game of the Hawks, at the WIN Entertainment Centre, to save the NBL's longest participating team, and the flow on of approximately $5 million dollars into the Illawarra's economy which was about to be lost forever!

"When you break things down, thousands will be affected without the team playing, those employed at the WIN Entertainment Centre. From floor movers to cleaners, the catering staff and ushers. Then there's the other businesses, restaurants, petrol stations, the list goes on!" he advised.

"That of course doesn't take into consideration the players and their families and the houses they purchase, the food they eat and the cars they buy."

It was clear "Captain Campbell" was again showing his leadership qualities by not standing around waiting.

He went on "I have spent many hours over the past couple of weeks with some good people, and we are impressed with the Cairns Taipans' model for moving forward. No team in the NBL is going to find it easy next season, so we will put in an honest 'expression of interest' to the NBL on the due date, it will then be a decision for the NBL".

Mat went on to explain for the next seven days invitations would be given to the community to become a part of The New Hawks in The New NBL starting at the end of season dinner on Friday night which has attracted nearly 400 sponsors and fans.

The media will be requested to play a big part in this enormous plan, so to will politicians, businesses, the fans and the community.

"I want to applaud the community for all they have done for the team in the past, and make sure The Hawks are here for many years to come, I will be hanging that net up again and I'm sure Sav will be at the other ending of the court hanging up his!"
