The Saviour announced as i98fm/ahm Local Hero of the Year

Mat Campbell was today announced as the i98fm/ahm Local Hero of the Year for his efforts in the Save the Hawks campaign and ensuring the Wollongong ahm Hawks survival in the National Basketball League.

Dubbed as “the Saviour” Mat was recognised by a judging panel which included ahm ambassador and cricket great Steve Waugh for his commitment to the community and the regions economy.

Mat Campbell stood up for the community and led a small team of individuals in the fight to save the Wollongong ahm Hawks and the $5 million dollars the clubs existence brings to the Illawarra economy.

“It’s overwhelming to have just been nominated let alone be announced as i98fm/ahm Local Hero of the Year. There are so many individuals in the Illawarra just striving to do their part for the community and make our region a better place for all.” Mat Campbell said.

“All of the people nominated today share a passion for our individual areas of expertise, we should be proud of everyone who was nominated for an award today.”

The fight to Save the Hawks could not have been complete without the support and commitment of Naming Rights Sponsor Australian Health Management.

“One of the key criteria’s to make sure the Wollongong ahm Hawks would participate in the 2009/10 NBL Season, was the fact that we needed to have a naming rights sponsor on board. Australian Health Management stepped up early in the campaign and committed to another two years as naming rights sponsor of the Wollongong ahm Hawks.”

“I cannot thank the community enough for their support which led to the formation of the new not for profit community based club. Your foundation membership pledges and commitment to saving the club was tremendous.”

“There was a small group of individuals behind the scenes that supported me throughout the Save the Hawks campaign. There work and commitment went above and beyond their call of duty, so I must thank them for their contribution and support.” Campbell added.

Wollongong ahm Hawks CEO Wayne Morris was also nominated in the category for Volunteer of the Year (Sport & Recreation) for his contribution to the Save the Hawks campaign.

The club is not too far away from releasing season ticket information for renewing and new ticket holders for the 2009/10 NBL Season. An announcement will be made shortly on the new office location along with contact details of the new not for profit organisation.
